Why This Matters

The addition of the discounted M5 MacBook Pro to Apple's refurbished store highlights ongoing value opportunities for consumers, especially with storage configurations and pricing adjustments. It also underscores Apple's strategic pricing and product refresh cycle, impacting both buyers and the broader tech market. Consumers can now access more affordable options for high-performance laptops, though they should consider storage changes when evaluating value.

Key Takeaways

Apple has added the plain M5 MacBook Pro to its refurbished store for a discounted price. However, the base storage change from last month means the value compared to new discounted hardware might not be as competitive as usual.

Apple’s 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro refurb has a 512GB SSD

When Apple introduced the M5 MacBook Pro in October, the 14-inch laptop originally came with 512GB storage for $1599.

Last month, Apple revised the hardware and raised the base price. The base storage changed to 1TB, and the starting price went up to $1699.

While the M5 MacBook Pro starting price increased, the cost of the 1TB model was cheaper than previously when configured as an upgrade.

Apple’s refurbished M5 MacBook Pro has 512GB storage with a discount based on the original selling price of $1599. The refurbished machine is discounted by $240, bringing the price to $1359.

The 1TB version of the same machine, sold brand new on Amazon, currently goes for $1549.

That’s still more than the refurb price, but it’s a nice savings from Apple’s new price, especially for double the storage compared to the refurb model.
