Why This Matters

ElevenLabs' launch of the ElevenMusic app marks a significant step in integrating AI into music creation, offering both consumers and creators new tools for generating and discovering AI-driven music. This move highlights the growing importance of AI in diversifying digital content and expanding creative possibilities within the tech industry. As AI music generation becomes more accessible, it could reshape how music is produced, consumed, and monetized, impacting both artists and streaming platforms.

Key Takeaways

Voice AI company ElevenLabs has quietly released an iOS app called ElevenMusic that can be used to create music with AI and discover AI-generated music in order to compete with platforms like Suno and Udio.

The new app, which was listed on the App Store for a few weeks and finally released on April 1, suggests ElevenLabs wants to be more than just a voice model company. The company sees tools that use AI to create music and other mediums as a way to grow and protect itself from the eventual commoditization of AI audio models.

ElevenMusic is currently free to use, and users can generate up to seven songs per day using natural language prompts. Users can also adjust the length of the song, if the song has lyrics, and the writing style.

Users can discover songs created by others, and also remix them using text prompts. These remixes would also count towards their daily limit. The app has live stations, pre-created albums, and daily mixes with different moods such as Focus, Energy, Relax, Late Night, Cosmic, and Chill. And just like other music streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music, there are top charts, trending now, and new releases sections.

The company is also offering a Pro tier for $9.99 per month or $95.90 per year. This subscription will enable users to create up to 500 tracks every month, give storage space of over 500 GB, and provide access to all kinds of styles and moods.

ElevenLabs, which raised a $500 million Series C round at a $11 billion valuation in February, has been bulking up on creative models and tools for the last few months. Last August, the company released its first music generation model, which it claimed to be commercially safe. Earlier this year, the company also partnered with top music producers to release an album created with the help of AI. The startup recently released a creative tool that can handle ad generation, voiceovers, translation, image generation, video making, voice cloning, sound creation, and more.

The company has had consumer tools like ElevenLabs voice generation and ElevenReader until now. It also started a program to let authors earn royalties to convert and distribute their books on the ElevenReader platform last year. ElevenLabs, which is also hiring for a consumer marketing role to grow its music vertical, could offer royalty or other incentives for users to create more music on its platform.
