Tim Cook emphasizes the importance of authenticity and adherence to core values for Apple’s next CEO, highlighting that maintaining a clear sense of the company's guiding principles is crucial for long-term success. His advice underscores the significance of leadership integrity in navigating technological innovation and corporate direction, which is vital for both industry stability and consumer trust.

Key Takeaways

Tim Cook is officially stepping down as Apple CEO this year, with John Ternus taking his place. Here’s what Cook recently said his words of advice will be to Apple’s next CEO.

Tim Cook was recently asked the one thing he would tell his successor

When Steve Jobs passed the CEO torch to Tim Cook, his main words of advice were to never ask what Jobs would do.

Instead, Jobs charged Cook to “just do the right thing.”

Ben Cohen at The Wall Street Journal, just weeks ago around Apple’s 50th anniversary, asked Tim Cook: “What’s the one thing you would tell the person coming after you?”

Cook clearly already knew that person would be John Ternus.

And he gave a thoughtful, expansive answer that has been published today.

Here was Tim’s response, per the WSJ video available here:

I would probably say the same thing. You can get in paralysis if you start trying to port yourself into somebody else’s thinking. So I would say: “Be yourself. Keep a firm North Star on the values of the company. Because if you get the values right, if you keep the North Star in clear view, you may be blown off course a little bit, but eventually you will come back to the right path. And I have always found that to be true.”
