Why This Matters

The upcoming iOS 27 update introduces AI-powered photo editing tools that significantly enhance user creativity and convenience, reflecting Apple's focus on integrating advanced AI features into its ecosystem. These innovations could reshape how consumers and professionals edit and enhance images on iPhones, emphasizing the importance of AI in mobile photography. However, some features face reliability challenges, which may impact their initial rollout and user experience.

Key Takeaways

iOS 27 will include multiple new AI-powered photo editing features, according to a new report. These features will let you quickly improve, expand, and reframe your images.

iOS 27 to focus on AI-powered photo editing features

Bloomberg reports that iOS 27 will refresh the editing interface in the Photos app to add a new “Apple Intelligence Tools” section. Inside this menu, there will reportedly be three options that can make changes to a photo in a “few seconds.”

“Extend” will allow users to “generate additional image content beyond the original frame,” the report explains. “For example, someone could take a close-up photo of a landmark and use the tool to fill in surrounding scenery.” Users can choose how much is added by dragging the photo’s edges with their fingers.

“Enhance” will automatically improve an image’s quality, as well as aspects like lighting and colors. Finally, the “Reframe” option will let users “shift perspective” for spatial photos.

However, development of these new photo editing features “hasn’t gone entirely smoothly,” the report says. In particular, the Extend and Reframe tools “don’t perform reliably during internal testing.” This could lead Apple to “delay or scale back the features depending on improvements to its underlying models.”

iOS 27 is set to be unveiled at WWDC on June 8. In addition to the new photo editing features, the update will reportedly include major improvements to the broader Siri experience. Apple is also focusing on bug fixes and general stability improvements.
