Why This Matters

Apple has discontinued the RAM upgrade options for its high-end M3 Ultra Mac Studio, leaving only a 96GB configuration available. This change highlights supply constraints and the company's shift towards fixed configurations, which could impact professional users seeking customizable hardware. For consumers and industry professionals, it underscores the importance of planning for limited upgrade paths and potential supply shortages in high-performance Apple devices.

Key Takeaways

Apple’s most powerful Mac Studio no longer includes RAM upgrade options. This comes after Apple has seemingly ran out of inventory for the two highest memory options supposed by the machine.

M3 Ultra Mac Studio only available in 96GB RAM configuration

As Basic Apple Guy points out today, Apple has removed the option to buy the M3 Ultra Mac Studio with 256GB RAM. It was already next to impossible to order.

Back in March, Apple removed the option to configure the M3 Ultra Mac Studio with 512GB of memory.

This leaves the M3 Ultra Mac Studio with a single memory configuration: 96GB.

Apple signaled last week that it expects both the Mac mini and Mac Studio to remain supply constrained for several months. Apple also dropped the base storage Mac mini model last week.

Meanwhile, Apple’s M5 Max MacBook Pro can be configured with up to 128GB of memory.
