Why This Matters

The upgrade to LTPO+ technology in the iPhone 18 Pro's display signifies a major advancement in power efficiency and display responsiveness, enhancing user experience and battery life. This development highlights Apple's focus on optimizing display technology for premium devices, which could influence future industry standards and consumer expectations.

Key Takeaways

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to have the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes as their predecessors, but a new report says those displays are coming with a key technology upgrade.

iPhone 18 Pro moving to LTPO+ display for improved power efficiency and Always-On performance

A new report from The Elec says that Apple is moving to LTPO+ technology for its iPhone 18 Pro OLED panels.

The report says that iPhone 18 Pro panels are expected to be produced almost entirely by Samsung and LG. BOE was reportedly unable to secure Apple’s approval for this year’s flagships.

Industry sources cited BOE’s lower-temperature polycrystalline oxide-plus (LTPO+) technology capability as a key reason for the setback. Compared with Samsung Display and LG Display, BOE is said to lag in both panel quality and manufacturing yield.

BOE was a key partner on iPhone 17 Pro panels, so missing out on iPhone 18 Pro is a setback for the company.

However, the report reveals that one advantage iPhone 18 Pro will have over its predecessor is the use of LTPO+ technology, an upgrade from the standard LTPO used in iPhone 17 Pro.

LTPO is the technology behind the iPhone’s Always-On Display, as it enables dynamic refresh rate adjustment.

Conventional LTPO applies oxide materials to switching thin-film transistors (TFTs). LTPO+ extends oxide usage to driving TFTs as well, enabling finer current control for OLED light emission and allowing displays to optimize operation based on surrounding conditions and user environments, improving battery efficiency.

The two expected benefits of the upgrade to LTPO+ include:
