Why This Matters

Google's rollout of new gradient icons for Workspace apps marks a significant visual update aimed at enhancing clarity and brand distinction. This redesign responds to previous criticism and improves user experience across web and mobile platforms, signaling Google's focus on modernizing its visual identity for both consumers and the tech industry.

Key Takeaways

Following our report last month, Google is beginning to roll out its gradient icon redesign for Workspace apps.

The first appearance of this major visual revamp is in the web app launcher available in the vast majority of Google websites in the top-right corner and Chrome’s New Tab page.

We see the new icons for Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Chat, Meet, Vids, Forms, Keep, Voice, and Tasks.

Meanwhile, these icons are appearing in the top-left corner of some Google apps. So far, we’ve noticed them in Google Keep and the homepages for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids, Forms, and Sites, though the favicons remain unchanged. The logos on the actual editors have yet to be updated.

With this revamp, Google is addressing the criticism of its previous icon set. Everything is more distinct in terms of color and shape. The previous mandate of including all four company colors in icons is clearly gone for the majority of apps, with Gmail the only exception.

The Workspace page container has been removed for most apps to allow for larger, more unique icons. For a full icon comparison, be sure to read our original report.

Update: The gradient icons are now rolling out to iOS.
