Preventing cancer requires more than a list of carcinogens

The withdrawal of the US Food and Drug Administration’s proposed rule to restrict the sale and use of sunlamp products in March is a reminder that scientifically classifying something as a hazard is not the same as protecting the public from it. The rule would have restricted people under the age of 18 from using sunlamp products that emit ultraviolet light, and required adults to acknowledge the risks. This decision shows the gap between science and health governance.
