Two new high-end MacBooks now expected later this year

Apple has long been rumored to have a new high-end MacBook coming this fall.

Originally, it was expected to be a fully redesigned MacBook Pro. But more recently, rumors have indicated it could be an all-new ‘MacBook Ultra’ instead.

Mark Gurman’s reporting at Bloomberg this week strongly supports the latter, while adding that a new MacBook Pro is on the way too.

Today Gurman reported that the touchscreen MacBook with all-new design will run M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and be “positioned at the top of Apple’s lineup.”

Including the same exact chips as the MacBook Pro received months ago seems to lend fresh support to this being a brand new, distinct ‘MacBook Ultra’ line.

Additionally, yesterday Gurman reported that a new MacBook Pro with M6 chip is expected this fall too. He wrote:

Apple has tested the M6 chip as part of a refreshed entry-level MacBook Pro, code-named J804, which has been planned for this year

That detail was part of a broader piece explaining that Apple plans to skip M6 Pro and M6 Max chips to fast-track high-end M7 chips instead.
