MagSafe is typically known for charging only, but there are use cases for it as just a mounting technology/use case. If you don’t want to charge your iPhone in your car or you have a wired CarPlay setup, you might want to use it just for mounting. That’s what the ESR OmniLock for MagSafe Car Mount is designed to do. Let’s take a look.
MagSafe Monday: Every Monday, Bradley Chambers looks at the latest and greatest in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.
Like I said in the intro, if you rely on a wired connection for CarPlay, or you just prefer the much faster speeds of plugging your phone directly into a USB-C cable, this is a solid product. There’s no charging. No plugs. It’s just a mount. If you just need a sturdy place to hold your iPhone while you navigate, this mount absolutely delivers the solution. It has 20 N52 magnets. In my testing, the magnetic hold is incredibly strong. You do not have to worry about your iPhone falling onto the floorboard when you hit a pothole, drive down a rough road, or taking a sharp turn.
Improving AC airflow
Some standard MagSAfe vent mounts sit completely flush with the plastic blades, completely blocking airflow. While your iPhone stays cool, it does limit your AC a bit. ESR uses a reinforced aluminum alloy hook that securely attaches to the vent, and an extended OmniLock arm positions your phone away from the air source. You get the easy installation and perfect eye-level viewing of a vent mount without sacrificing your air conditioning. It’s really sturdy. While it’s plastic, it feels like heavy duty plasitc
The ball joint and 360-degree rotating arm allow you to easily adjust the viewing angle. It’s very stable and does not vibrate while you are driving. In my experience with testing, it’s best to pull it off the switch to landscape or back to portrait rather than spinning it, though.
Wrap up on the ESR OmniLock car mount
If you want a simple and highly secure way to mount your iPhone in the car without charging, the ESR OmniLock is a fantastic option. By removing the wireless charging element, ESR was able to focus entirely on building a rock-solid magnetic holder that keeps your vents completely clear. My wife prefers a wired connection for her car’s interface, so she uses MagSafe only for a mount while the car interface charges it over. It’s low-cost, and if all you want is MagSafe for mounting, this is a great pickup.
You can buy the ESR OmniLock car mount on Amazon or directly from ESR.
