Apple Wallet keeps adding support for new car key brands, with recent additions like Toyota and Porsche. Now, another popular automaker is reportedly about to get car keys: Volkswagen.
Volkswagen (VW) expected to launch Apple Wallet car keys soon, per backend code
In the lead-up to Apple Wallet bringing car key support to a new automaker, Apple updates its servers with code that prepares for the addition.
This is how we’ve learned about several new car key brands in the past. For example, Toyota was added to Apple’s backend list of car key automakers about two months before it officially launched support.
As spotted by MacRumors, today Apple’s backend has again been updated with a new addition that relates to car keys.
Per their report, Volkswagen (VW) is now on the list of companies that support (or will soon) Apple Wallet’s car key feature.
There’s unfortunately no info yet on specific vehicles that will gain car keys. What we often see with automakers is that car keys roll out slowly, to only one or two vehicles initially.
We also don’t know when exactly VW will formally launch Apple car keys. It could be in the next couple weeks, or potentially not for another couple months.
Here’s an overview of recent car key additions, plus the full supported vehicle list as of last fall.
