iOS 27 hints at Apple Wallet car key support for two new automakers

According to code in the latest iOS 27 beta, Apple is preparing to launch car key support for two new automakers: Xiaomi and Lucid Motors. Here’s what we know right now.

Apple Wallet car key may soon support Xiaomi and Lucid

The code was spotted by Aaron Perris for MacRumors in iOS 27 beta 3, which was released earlier this week.

Apple first touted that Lucid Motors would support car key back at WWDC 2025, but there haven’t been any other updates since then. Xiaomi, meanwhile, hasn’t been mentioned as a potential car key partner until today’s report.

There’s no word on which specific cars from Lucid and Xiaomi will support car key. It’s also unclear when the feature will launch. The fact that iOS 27 includes code referencing the capability could suggest it will debut with the public launch of that update in September.

Today’s news follows a report from earlier this week, which said Apple’s backend was recently updated to add Volkswagen (VW) to the list of automakers that support (or will soon) car key in Apple Wallet.

With this feature, users can add their car’s key to Apple Wallet on their iPhone and Apple Watch. They can then use that device to lock, unlock, and start their car. Specific implementations of the feature vary by automaker, but Apple’s platform supports passive entry, proximity-based entry, and remote control via the Wallet app.

Car key also supports Express Mode, so you can use it without unlocking your device with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. You can also share car keys with other people using Messages, Mail, and AirDrop.

Have you tried the car key feature in Apple Wallet? What do you think of it? Let us know down in the comments.
