Spotify announced today a series of updates to Release Radar, giving listeners more control over the music recommendations they receive every Friday. Here are the details.

Release Radar gets new genre and artist controls

Spotify announced today that several improvements are coming to Release Radar, its weekly discovery playlist that combines new releases from artists users already follow with singles selected to match their listening tastes.

Spotify says nearly 9 million users tune in to Release Radar every Friday, adding that the playlist “has become a global destination for new music discovery.”

Starting this month, the company says users will see new controls to “adjust the playlist so that it narrows in on a specific genre, focuses exclusively on new-to-you artists, or only serves up other personalized options tailored to your taste.”

These controls will be available at the top of the Release Radar playlist, both in the app and on Spotify’s web platform, and will let users choose up to five options that include “Discover new artists,” “Editors’ picks”, and three more based on their listening habits.

Additionally, Release Radar is getting a new look, with an improved header art, and under-the-hood improvements that promise to make the playlist “even more relevant with sharper, more personalized recommendations to make sure you see tracks that best fit your taste.”

Spotify also highlighted several previously introduced discovery features, including:

New Music Friday’s recent addition of editor-led video recommendations;
