I’m making a painful announcement today at Patreon. We’re reducing the size of our team by 20%, or 93 teammates. It’s going to be a hard day for our team. My note to our teammates, which is pasted below, explains most of what I want you all to know about this decision, but there are a few extra thoughts I wanted to share with you all directly.
First, the people who work at Patreon are special, beautiful humans, through and through. The energy that our team has for Patreon’s mission is a force of nature. So many wonderful humans are going to lose their jobs today in an especially painful moment and market. I am the person responsible for that decision, and I take that with the utmost seriousness. I encourage you to read the note I sent our team at the bottom of this post to understand more about why I chose this path.
Second, Patreon’s core business is healthy and strong, and we’re going to be a rock for creators for decades to come. Hundreds of thousands of creators rely on Patreon for their livelihoods, businesses, and communities, and it can be nerve-wracking to see companies you depend on go through moments like this from the outside. So I want to be clear with all of you – the creators who bring Patreon to life – that this change allows us to continue building from a position of strength, no matter how the chaotic world around us continues to change. The leadership team and I have always managed Patreon’s business and financials to ensure that we will be a resilient foundation for creators over the long term. That is our ultimate priority and responsibility, and the team and I are deeply committed to that promise.
Lastly, we’re not changing our roadmap or priorities. Patreon will continue shipping new features, improvements to our core experiences, media and community products, and more. The company’s strategy and focus, which I explain in the note below, are not changing.
I’m not going to be as present in this space as I usually am for a bit, because I’m going to focus on our team internally. But I’ll be back soon.

Hi Team,
I have a painful update this morning. I have decided to reduce the size of our team by 20%, or 93 people. All teammates at the company will receive an email within the next few minutes indicating whether or not your role is impacted by this change.
I’ll get into the reasons for this decision and logistics for the day below, but before I do, I want to acknowledge how painful this will be for the kind, ambitious, hard working, and mission-driven humans who make up this company. The people at Patreon are the core of our spirit and what makes our culture and business so special. Today will be hard for so many people, and as the person responsible for this decision and the decisions leading up to this, I don’t take that lightly. Please take the time you need today to support our departing teammates and yourself.
