When we speak about the rise of Russian mathematics, we often imagine the brilliant flowering of the 19th and 20th centuries — the eras of Chebyshev, Lyapunov, Markov, Kolmogorov, and many others. But the roots of this tradition reach back much earlier, into an era when Russia had no systematic mathematical culture at all. The modern tradition began almost abruptly, through the ambitions of one ruler and the arrival of several foreign geniuses.
This story — part institutional history, part intellectual migration — shows how Russia became one of the world’s mathematical centers.
Peter the Great and the Birth of the Academy
Peter the Great had a deep, practical appreciation for mathematics — not as an abstract science, but as a tool for building fleets, armies, and a modern state. By the last year of his life, founding a Russian Academy of Sciences had become one of his most urgent projects.

He had long discussed the idea with leading European thinkers — Leibniz among them — and in 1724 he signed the decree establishing the Academy. Peter died soon after, and the Academy opened only posthumously, but his intent had already shaped its direction: mathematics must stand at its core.
At that time, the leading voice in selecting scholars for the new institution was Christian Wolff, a German philosopher and devoted disciple of Leibniz. And Wolff’s instincts would change the trajectory of Russian science.
Why Basel Became the Center of New Mathematics
After the breakthroughs of Newton and Leibniz — who formalized the calculus started by Fermat, Roberval, Huygens, Torricelli — something remarkable occurred. For a few decades, the forefront of mathematical analysis moved to an unlikely place: Basel, a small Swiss city.
There, in the early 18th century, lived the extraordinary Bernoulli family — Johann, Jakob, Daniel, Nikolaus — a dynasty of creative mathematicians whose work shaped the new calculus. And among their students and collaborators was a young, prodigious Leonhard Euler.
