Spotify has crossed 300 million paying subscribers, a major new milestone for the audio subscription service as it competes with Apple Music.
The company disclosed the figure in its second-quarter earnings results, reporting 300 million Premium subscribers, up 9% year over year, alongside 777 million monthly active users.
Spotify has steadily expanded its paid offerings from strictly streaming music to include audiobooks, podcasts, and more.
Apple hasn’t disclosed Apple Music subscriber numbers since crossing 60 million in 2019. However, the company recently announced an even larger (but very different) milestone: 1.5 billion paid subscriptions.
That total spans Apple’s own services, including Apple Music, iCloud+, and Apple TV. However, a very large portion is believed to be subscriptions to third-party apps sold through the App Store. Apple earns 15 to 30% of revenue through App Store transactions.
Both Spotify and Apple Music have also become more expensive this year. Spotify raised its US Individual plan from $11.99 to $12.99 in January, while Apple Music increased its Individual plan from $10.99 to $11.99 last month.
Apple Music and Spotify are competing for users
Spotify’s growth follows a busy stretch of additions this year, including these features and updates:
Apple Music, meanwhile, has more coming in iOS 27 next month, including redesigned artist and album pages, improved AutoMix transitions, faster playback, landscape Now Playing, Siri AI integration, and more.
