Samsung’s new Z8 foldables are off to a great start, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 particularly impressing users with its capable yet pocketable form factor. Beyond the new form factor, the new foldables are also being praised for their near-crease-free displays, and it’s clear that Samsung put a lot of effort into this technology (even if others are arguably doing it better). Samsung has now shared more details and a closer look at the advancements in its new foldables, and you can’t help but be impressed.
Samsung Display has shared a deeper dive into the foldable OLED on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. At the heart of it is a new Titanium-enhanced panel structure (called Flex Titanium) that helps create a foldable display that is thinner, stronger, and more seamless when folded compared to preceding products.
Samsung Display replaced the conventional plastic film with a titanium alloy film and added a reinforced titanium plate, giving us a dual-layer titanium structure. This change alone gives us a foldable structure with better durability under repeated folding and unfolding.
The reinforced titanium plate also acts as a support layer, plus it has smaller gaps in the folding area to facilitate denser application of the adhesive layer on top. The net result here is more effective dispersion of impact in the folding area while reducing the visibility of display creases.
The switch from the conventional plastic film to a titanium alloy film is said to offer approximately 20 times greater stiffness. The new film is about one-third the thickness of a human hair and helps reduce overall display thickness by 12%. That may not sound like a lot, but every little bit counts when you’ve already set a high bar with previous generations.
The newer OLED panel also boasts a 15% improvement in resolution, going from 368ppi on the inner display to 422ppi, matching the cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The foldable panel also boasts 10% power efficiency thanks to data line mapping technology optimized for the Diamond Pixel RGB sub-pixel arrangement in use.
