The likely reason for the lower temperature is the way many gaming laptops handle airflow. They pull cool air through vents on the bottom of the chassis and push hot air out through side or rear exhausts. A wooden desktop can hold heat beneath the machine. Metal conducts heat away more readily, so the area around the intake vents may stay cooler.
That doesn't mean the table cools the laptop the same way a fan or liquid-cooling system does. It is simply less likely to trap heat under the chassis. In a room with air conditioning, that can give the laptop access to cooler intake air.
For gaming laptops, a few degrees can make a difference. Modern mobile CPUs and GPUs often run near their temperature limits during long sessions. Lower temperatures may help reduce fan noise or prevent the system from reducing clock speeds to control heat, though results will depend on the laptop, the room temperature and the game being played.
