The return of Bad Monkey for a second season highlights Apple TV's expanding portfolio of original comedy series from renowned creators like Bill Lawrence. Its success underscores the growing importance of original programming in attracting and retaining subscribers in the competitive streaming industry.

Key Takeaways

Bad Monkey is an excellent Apple TV comedy from creator Bill Lawrence, of Ted Lasso and Shrinking fame—and it returns soon for a new season. Here are the details.

Bad Monkey season 2 premieres December 2

Bill Lawrence has become one of the most prolific hitmakers in TV comedy of late. He’s not new to the genre, with prior successes including Scrubs and Cougar Town.

But in the streaming era, Lawrence has been behind hits like Ted Lasso, Shrinking, HBO’s Rooster, and the Vince Vaughn comedy Bad Monkey.

Shrinking aired earlier this year, Ted Lasso is airing now, and Apple has just announced that Bad Monkey is about to return for a new season.

Bad Monkey season 2 premieres Wednesday, December 2 with its first episode, followed by weekly releases through February 3.

Here’s the official plot summary:

After Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) witnesses the murder of Florida’s finest fixer, an ambitious state attorney pairs him up with a strait-laced forensic accountant to solve the crime. Eager to regain his detective’s badge, Yancy finds himself embroiled in a turf war between rival criminal organizations as he navigates a variety of Florida oddballs, including an erudite mob boss, his unhinged son and a hard-edged young woman who needs Yancy’s protection. Meanwhile, Yancy contends with his aging father; unresolved romantic tension with Dr. Rosa Campensino (Natalie Martinez), who launches her own investigation into a mysterious rash; and a bombastic animal relocation specialist whose business threatens the local environment.

Vince Vaughn stars in the series, and is joined in season 2 by John Malkovich among others.

If you haven’t seen Bad Monkey, it has a very different, somewhat darker tone than Lawrence’s other comedies. But it’s very much worth a watch. And if you’re not a fan of Lasso or Shrinking’s ‘heartwarming’ vibes, you might still enjoy Bad Monkey.
