GoKawiilMicrosoft launches disc-to-digital program letting Xbox owners unlock digital copies from physical discs
Microsoft is rolling out a new feature, starting with Xbox Insiders on August 31, that lets players convert eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs into permanent digital entitlements simply by inserting the disc and launching the game. Once claimed, the game becomes playable without the disc and gains access to Xbox Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming, though the physical disc still works as before. Each disc carries only one revocable license, meaning reselling or lending it can transfer the digital entitlement to whoever uses it next.

This move blurs the long-standing line between physical and digital ownership, potentially reducing the resale value of used game discs since only one account can hold the digital rights at a time. It also signals publishers must opt in, meaning support will be inconsistent across the game library, and older Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs appear excluded due to manufacturing differences.
- Xbox Insiders can test disc-to-digital conversion starting August 31
- Only one revocable digital license exists per disc, affecting resale value
- Support depends on publisher opt-in and disc manufacturing, excluding older consoles
