Why This Matters

GTA 6 marks a significant leap in the open-world genre with its massive, highly detailed map, extensive story length, and innovative crime mechanics that emphasize realism. This development signals a shift towards more immersive and consequence-driven gameplay, setting new standards for the industry and offering players a richer experience. The game's scale and depth could influence future titles to prioritize realism and expansive worlds.

Key Takeaways

TL;DR: Rockstar premiered a 26-minute Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay showcase on Netflix, then opened the floodgates on preview coverage from outlets flown to Rockstar North last month. The game is enormous: a map that's three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, an 80-hour playthrough, more than 600,000 NPC animations, and gameplay design that aims to shift away from consequence-free sandbox chaos. The video hits YouTube tonight.

After three years of trailers and delays, Rockstar finally showed Grand Theft Auto VI actually being played. The unusual 26-minute "Extended Look" premiered on Netflix hours before it lands on YouTube.

The footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5 and looks amazingly detailed. Alongside it, previews went live from journalists and creators who spent time at Rockstar North last month, and between the two there is more concrete information about GTA 6 than we have had since the game was announced in 2022. Here is what actually matters.

The scale

Co-studio head at Rockstar North, Rob Nelson, gave YouTuber TGG a set of figures during the preview event: the map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. Rockstar maps have never been the biggest in gaming, but they have generally been the most detailed.

Nelson also told The New York Times that his own recent playthrough took about 80 hours, covering the main story plus some optional objectives that carry narrative consequences. For reference, Red Dead Redemption 2's story runs roughly 50 to 60 hours. If that holds, GTA 6 is comfortably the longest game Rockstar has shipped.

Crime now has a paper trail

A most substantive change is that GTA 6 wants you to "think like a criminal" rather than a wrecking ball. The wanted system has been rebuilt around information. A crime has to be witnessed by an NPC or picked up by an alarm before police are alerted, and responding officers get a description: your face, your clothes, your vehicle.

The HUD shows separate indicators for which of those details the police actually know. Hollow wanted stars mean they are searching but do not have a description. Shedding heat means invalidating those descriptions. Changing your hairstyle clears your appearance. Putting on sunglasses or a different hat does not – you need a full outfit change, which is why trunk storage for spare clothes is now a functional system.

Wearing a mask during the job and taking it off afterward can prevent the police from ever learning your face, even with CCTV present. Ditching a recognized car for another one lowers attention. If the cops know they are chasing a couple, Jason and Lucia can split up to divide the response.
