The technology has now reportedly proved its worth during the tragic Tibet-Nepal flooding, with one survivor saying it helped him contact rescuers and escape to safety.

As reported by PhoneArena, a survivor caught up in the disaster said he was able to maintain communication with the outside world via satellite connectivity on his HUAWEI Mate X5 after regular network service was lost. He later posted about his experience on the social media account of HUAWEI Executive Director Richard Yu.
The survivor said he used the satellite connection to contact a helicopter and was subsequently evacuated. He explained that the experience demonstrated just how valuable satellite communication can be when disasters take conventional networks offline.
The account comes against the backdrop of a devastating disaster affecting Tibet and Nepal. Over 900 people have been killed, with thousands more still missing at the latest count.
Apple introduced Emergency SOS via satellite with the iPhone 14 series, while Google has since brought Satellite SOS to Pixel phones. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series also supports satellite communication in North America, Europe, and Japan.
