There are quite a few options on the market if you want a dual-screen handheld, with devices from ANBERNIC, AYANEO, and AYN. Now, ANBERNIC has shown off its latest dual-screen device, and it stands out for one reason.
ANBERNIC unveiled the RG DS Plus via a YouTube video, and it turns out that this new handheld comes with a capacitive stylus. Furthermore, the RG DS Plus stands out from other dual-screen rivals thanks to an integrated stylus slot. This is in line with the original Nintendo DS and means you can quickly and easily store the stylus when it’s not in use. The new handheld even has a microphone in the hinge, mimicking the Nintendo DS microphone location.
The name suggests that we’re looking at a follow-up of sorts to last year’s RG DS, but the video shows that this device actually runs Linux instead of Android. Furthermore, ANBERNIC says it’ll come with a new Nintendo DS emulator called NNDDSS. That name would be in line with PSP emulator PPSSPP, although we’re guessing the PPSSPP team has nothing to do with this DS emulator. This new emulator supports screen swapping, touch control for the lower display, a real-time clock, save states, the microphone, and over 70 built-in shader options. It’s unclear whether this is a brand-new emulator or derived from another project like Drastic, DSemuME, or MelonDS.
Other features gleaned from the video include two 4.3-inch displays (1,024 x 768, 4:3 aspect ratio), a free-stop hinge, dual USB-C ports, dual microSD card slots, four digital shoulder buttons, a single analog stick, a 3.5mm port, and a pair of front-facing speakers.
There’s no word on core specs just yet, but the presence of Linux and dual microSD card slots suggests that we’re looking at a relatively low-end experience. Many ANBERNIC Linux handhelds don’t have built-in storage, but do have two microSD card slots. This allows you to run the operating system on one card and store your games and other files on the second card.
This isn’t the only Linux handheld ANBERNIC had up its sleeve this week. It also quietly listed the $38 ANBERNIC RG 35, which offers a Game Boy-like design and two analog sticks. The RG 35 also packs a 3.5-inch LCD screen, a low-end Rockchip RK3326 processor, 1GB of RAM, dual microSD card slots, and a 3,200mAh battery.
