Lenovo has never been particularly shy about making laptops do weird things. We’ve seen screens fold, twist, and even stretch vertically, and at IFA 2026, the company is experimenting with another idea: What if your regular 14-inch laptop could suddenly give you a much wider screen when you need it? That’s the idea behind Project Swan, one of two Intel-powered laptop concepts Lenovo is showing off at IFA this year. And while it’s still just a concept, it solves a problem anyone who regularly works on a laptop will probably recognize.
At first glance, Project Swan sounds surprisingly ordinary. It’s a 14-inch laptop that measures 17.9mm thick and weighs 1.6kg, so you could realistically toss it into a backpack and carry it to work without much thought. The clever bit happens when you need more room. Project Swan’s display can roll outward, transforming that compact 14-inch screen into a much larger 17-inch, 16:9 display.

And unlike some laptop concepts that feel like technology looking for a problem to solve, I can immediately see the appeal here. A 14-inch laptop is great when you’re squeezed into an airplane seat or working from a tiny coffee shop table, but it can quickly feel cramped once you actually need to get serious work done.
Project Swan could theoretically give you the best of both worlds. You’d carry around something closer to a regular thin-and-light laptop, then expand the display when you get to your hotel room, office desk, or anywhere else with a little more breathing room. It could save you from carrying a separate portable monitor or dealing with a dual-screen setup, while still giving you a much bigger workspace whenever you need it.
Of course, Lenovo still has plenty of questions to answer. A rollable display introduces moving parts, and durability will matter enormously if something like Project Swan ever becomes a laptop you can actually buy. It’ll also be interesting to see what repeatedly expanding that screen does to battery life and how sturdy the whole mechanism feels outside a carefully controlled demo.
