GoKawiilSomething to look forward to: Sony and Lego have officially introduced the Lego PlayStation following a leak on social media earlier in the week. The 1,911-piece set features a near 1:1 replica of the original PlayStation console along with a controller and a handful of Easter eggs.
Lego said the set (product number 72306), which is designed for adult builders, utilizes the unmistakable grey colorway of the original machine. Standout features include functional open and power buttons as well as a brick-built controller that plugs directly into the console. The system measures over 2.5 inches high, 10.5 inches wide, and 7.5 inches deep.
Diehard PlayStation fans will also appreciate the pair of hidden, buildable dioramas tucked inside the system. One is a miniature track from the original Gran Turismo game, while the other depicts a scene from 1999's Ape Escape. They can be concealed inside the console or pulled out for display alongside the machine.
Lego said the set is a love letter from one community of creator to another. Indeed, it celebrates more than 30 years of PlayStation history which is quite remarkable when you consider the original vision for the PlayStation was a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo, not a standalone console.
Lego is no stranger to officially licensed replica consoles. The brick maker has produced several similar sets over the years including recreations of the Sega Genesis, the Atari 2600, the Nintendo Game Boy, and the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES set is still a highly sought after kit that has only gone up in value since its launch. It arrived at a higher price point of $250, but also featured more pieces and even a matching retro TV set with moving parts.
The Lego PlayStation launches in time for the holidays on October 1 for early access members and October 4 for everyone else. Pricing is set at $179.99, and it will be available directly from Lego's online store, Lego brick and mortar stores, and through select retail partners.
