GoKawiilxAI ties SpaceX to offer half-price Starlink near Memphis data centers amid pollution backlash
xAI-affiliated SpaceXAI is giving Memphis and Southaven, Mississippi residents 50% off Starlink internet plans and waiving the upfront cost of its new V5 hardware kit, following criticism over unpermitted gas generators powering its AI data centers. About 2,000 households have signed up since the July launch, a small fraction of the roughly 250,000 households in the Memphis area. A similar promotion is running in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.
GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.
The discount looks more like a goodwill gesture than a fix for the underlying environmental complaints, since the low uptake suggests it won't meaningfully offset community anger over emissions from unpermitted power generation. It also highlights how satellite internet can help households without fiber access, but offers little advantage where cheaper, faster cable or fiber already exists.
- SpaceXAI cuts Starlink prices in half for residents near its Memphis AI data centers.
- Only about 2,000 subscribers have joined despite the offer running since July.
- The promotion doesn't address ongoing criticism of unpermitted generators powering xAI's operations.
