Why This Matters

Apple has set September 14 as the release date for iPadOS 27, whose headline feature is a rebuilt Siri powered by next-gen Apple Intelligence and a partnership with Google's Gemini models. That signals Apple leaning on an outside LLM provider for core assistant functionality, a notable shift for a company that emphasizes in-house silicon and software. However, the most advanced Siri features are gated to M4 iPads with 12GB or more of memory, creating a two-tier experience across a broad compatibility list.

Like iOS 27, iPadOS 27’s headlining feature is the new Siri AI, powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Apple Foundation Models, as well as Apple’s partnership with Google and its Gemini models.

The revamped assistant is designed to offer an experience closer to modern LLMs, using the user’s personal context to provide more relevant and in-depth answers. Siri can also search the web for information and use what it finds to generate complete, useful responses.

iPadOS 27 also introduces welcome adjustments to the Liquid Glass look, brings performance improvements to several system apps, and more.
