GoKawiilMIT Tech Review details INDXcoin fraud and new solar geoengineering research roadmap
A Big Story investigation from MIT Technology Review, done with Type Investigations, examines how pastor Eli Regalado and his wife launched INDXcoin after claiming divine instruction, raising over $3 million from more than 500 people before the project collapsed within a year with investors losing everything. Separately, the nonprofit Reflective has published a detailed plan outlining the experiments and infrastructure needed to better understand solar geoengineering before any real-world deployment decisions are made.

The INDXcoin case highlights how religious trust networks can be exploited to funnel money into unregulated crypto schemes with little oversight, leaving victims with few paths to recovery. Meanwhile, the solar geoengineering roadmap addresses a critical gap in climate policy: despite decades of theorizing, there's no coordinated research plan to assess the risks and effectiveness of intentionally altering the atmosphere, a decision with global stakes.
- Pastor Eli Regalado and his wife raised $3M+ from over 500 people for INDXcoin, claiming divine guidance.
- The cryptocurrency project collapsed within a year, wiping out investors' funds entirely.
- Nonprofit Reflective released a roadmap for research needed to responsibly evaluate solar geoengineering deployment.
