Hellish Surprise: During the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, Blizzard made an announcement no one could have foreseen. The studio is working on a new Diablo game, and players will get their hands on the new action-RPG experience sooner than expected. Diablo V is still years away from store shelves, but Blizzard is speeding up the franchise's development in a rather significant way.
Three years after releasing Diablo IV, Blizzard is already hard at work on a new entry in the popular ARPG franchise. Diablo V will be built exclusively around the titular villain, who was conspicuously absent from the previous game, while players will reportedly face a much darker world where the "Prime Evil" has already won.
Blizzard's announcement during BlizzCon 2026 was surprisingly rich with early details about the game's new features and changes.
Diablo V is set 100 years after the story told in Diablo IV, and seven years after the Lord of Terror turned Sanctuary into his own hellish, post-apocalyptic dominion. Blizzard showed a brief teaser trailer depicting some telling signs that these are, indeed, the end times. Most humans are now worshiping Diablo, while angels are being crucified by the thousands.
Even compared to Diablo's classic dark fantasy themes, Diablo V is shaping up to bring an even darker turn to the lore Blizzard North conceived three decades ago. The game is set in Westmarch, one of Sanctuary's Western kingdoms. There are no more "heroes" to save the day, although players will take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch's royal lineage.
Just as it did with Mephisto in Diablo IV, Blizzard is apparently giving the player's character a "unique" connection to the Lord of Terror himself. No towns or other safe places are left, which means players will have to wander through the game's hellish world with a caravan of survivors. The world is so desolate and brutal that quest-giving NPCs disappear altogether.
Additional Diablo V details unveiled by Blizzard during BlizzCon 2026 include the three playable classes available from the start: the "agile" Demon Hunter, the melee-focused Monk, and the brand-new class of disease-spreading Plague Knight. Monk was definitely one of the most enjoyable ways to play Diablo III, so I'm looking forward to trying a modern rendition of the class already.
Diablo V will double down on "darkness" after the rose-tinted world of Diablo III, and will bring back some classic, most-requested features of the franchise such as gear-based "green" sets. The game is set to arrive in spring 2029, which gives Blizzard years to work through the massive feedback players will certainly provide.
Some Diablo enthusiasts have indeed already expressed their dissatisfaction with Blizzard's premature announcement. Diablo V could be released with the shortest gap in the series, coming just six years after Diablo IV.
Players had to wait 12 years between Diablo II and Diablo III, while Diablo IV came out 11 years after the previous chapter. I finished recording and editing hours of Diablo III gameplay for my YT channel just recently, and I still have to purchase Diablo IV to start digging into the new world.
