GoKawiilApple is reportedly preparing to extend Car Key support in Apple Wallet to three more automakers. Here are the details.
Apple adds more automakers to its Car Key backend
As spotted by Aaron Perris on X, Apple has added three new automakers to its backend code for Apple Car Key: Lincoln, Freelander, and Lucid.
This does not mean, however, that support will be available right away. Backend changes are usually a good indication of upcoming Car Key integrations, but there is nothing in the code pointing to when they will actually launch. Apple has also yet to confirm which specific vehicles will support the feature.
Today’s discovery follows a string of similar backend changes pointing to upcoming Car Key support from other automakers. In July, similar backend references appeared for GWM’s Tank vehicles, followed shortly after by Haval, another brand owned by the same Chinese automaker.
Apple had also previously announced that Lucid would adopt Car Key, alongside a list of brands that included Acura, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Porsche, Rivian, and others.
Announced at WWDC 2020, Apple Car Key allows drivers to use an iPhone or Apple Watch to lock, unlock, and start a compatible vehicle, with support varying by automaker and model.
It currently works with more than 50 vehicle models from brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Toyota, and Rivian.
