Anthropic merging Claude Cowork with chat

Why This Matters

Anthropic is simplifying its Claude product lineup by folding Cowork into the main chat experience, reducing user confusion about where tasks belong. This reflects a broader industry trend of AI assistants becoming more unified and context-aware rather than fragmented into specialized modes, which could set expectations for how competitors design their own AI interfaces.

Key Takeaways

Anthropic announced today that Claude Cowork is being merged with chat. This means Claude will drop from three to two modes: Claude Chat and Claude Code.

The company says the change will roll out over the next few weeks for Pro and Max subscribers.

Here’s the announcement from Anthropic:

Starting today, Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. Bring a quick question, or hand over a report due at noon, and Claude takes it from there, even after you’ve closed your laptop. It’s rolling out on Pro and Max plans over the next few weeks, with more plans to follow.

Additionally, Claude’s main view is adding or integrating these features as well:

Claude Docs and Claude Slides are new today, and Claude Design now works inside your conversations too.

As for why the change is happening, here’s what the company says:

We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged. What they’d started in one also didn’t carry into the other. So we stopped making you choose. Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have.

As mentioned, the change isn’t happening overnight. Instead, here’s what to expect:

This is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, in the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks to existing and new users on these plans. There’s nothing to turn on. Team and Free plans will follow soon, and Enterprise admins will hear from us at least 30 days before anything changes for their organizations.
