When Xteink launched the Xteink X4, it made a big impression on e-reader fans. The pocketable E-Ink device was great for DRM-free reading, and it was small enough to fit on the back of most phones. However, nothing is perfect, and improvements can always be made. Enter the spiritual successor to the Xteink X4.
Good e-Reader reports that the Chinese startup behind the Xteink X4 is launching the Xteink S4. The Xteink S4 has a 4.3 E-Ink touchscreen that offers 220 PPI. It’s said to weigh 95 grams and is 6.98mm thick. However, what’s particularly notable is the operating system.
The previous e-reader ran on a proprietary Linux-based OS, which only allowed you to read DRM-free EPUB files. Xteink has reportedly switched to Android 11 for the S4. This is a big deal, as it gives the device much more flexibility. With Android 11 on board, you’ll be able to sideload from reading apps like Kindle, Kobo, and KOReader.
Another big improvement is the battery capacity. The X4 came with a 650mAh battery, which the company claimed provides up to two weeks of battery life with moderate use. With the S4, on the other hand, you’ll be getting a 1,400mAh battery.
Additionally, the S4 is said to feature 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless book transfers or audio listening. And finally, it’s said to have a cool and warm front light for easy reading in the dark and a USB-C port for charging and data syncing.
The Xteinks S4 is launching in China initially. However, it’s believed that the product could see an international launch in the following months.
