A huge share of Kenya’s population lives in remote villages and townships, far away from the amenities offered by urban life. And though Kenya’s rural population may have shrunk in recent decades, it still encompasses the vast majority of its people, presenting a major challenge for the country’s struggling healthcare sector.

One group of students from half a world away is hoping to help. As EuroNews reports, students at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have designed a solar-powered electric ambulance, meant to improve emergency healthcare access to remote communities.

Called the Stella Juva, the vehicle reportedly came about following discussions with non-government organizations working on improving healthcare access across Africa. The ambulance, which is decidedly Cybertruck-shaped, is designed to transport emergency medical supplies as well as equipment for basic medical-checkups, making it more like a health clinic on wheels.

Per EuroNews, it comes equipped with an ultrasound scanner, X-ray equipment, a defibrillator, and a refrigerator for transporting vaccinations and other supplies.

“It will enable us to go and screen mothers and babies, catch complications early and refer them in real time,” Geoffery Sadera, a project officer at the non-profit Amref Health Africa, told EuroNews.

All together, the EV boasts a range of about just over 444 miles. It’s said to have a top speed of just shy of 75mph. The Juva is now being tested in select communities across Kenya to see how viable a fully solar-powered ambulance can be when deployed in real world conditions.

As exciting a development as it is, Kenya still faces a long series of hurdles that no amount of buzzy EVs can solve. As a 2025 report by the Kenyan Office of the Auditor General observed, the country still lacks a centralized toll-free emergency number like 911, a symptom of the many systemic gaps plaguing Kenya’s public health system.

As emergency dispatch is organized on a county-by-county basis, much of Kenya’s emergency services lack basic essentials like trained dispatchers, reliable internet service, and emergency backup power, let alone logistical systems like electronic call-logging and real-time response tracking.

In its summary of the Auditor General’s report, the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation noted that only 26 percent of the public was aware of what number to dial in case of an emergency. Even when an ambulance is dispatched, the average national response time ranged from 20 minutes to an hour — and that’s for those counties which actually had dispatch data to share.
