GoKawiilGoogle opens pre-orders for $899 Googlebook laptop built around Gemini AI
Google has begun taking pre-orders for its Googlebook laptop, priced at $899, months after unveiling it in May. The device runs Android OS with a desktop Chrome browser and ChromeOS-like features, but its main selling point is deep integration of Gemini AI, including an AI-driven cursor called Magic Cursor and a dictation tool called Rambler that cleans up rambling speech into text.
GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.
Google is essentially wagering that consumers will pay for new hardware just to get AI baked directly into the operating system rather than accessed through apps or browsers. If successful, Googlebooks could eventually supplant Chromebooks entirely, funneling millions of existing budget-laptop users into Google's Gemini ecosystem. But features like Magic Cursor resemble existing tools like Circle to Search, which didn't drive major platform shifts on their own, raising doubts about whether AI alone can justify a new purchase.
- Googlebook pre-orders start at $899, months after its May unveiling.
- Key features include Magic Cursor for AI-assisted browsing and Rambler for AI-cleaned dictation.
- Google hopes the laptop can eventually replace Chromebooks and expand Gemini's user base.
