GoKawiilGoogle sets 2026-2027 timeline to retire Gemini Gems for Skills
Google published a phased schedule for replacing Gemini Gems with a new feature called Skills across Workspace and the Gemini app. Skills rollout begins October 2026, Gems move to a Settings panel by November 2026, and full removal of Gems is set for March 2027 for business/enterprise users and June 2027 for education accounts, with remaining Gems auto-migrated to draft skills.
GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.
The extended timeline gives enterprise and education customers time to adjust workflows, including Workspace Studio flows built around the 'Ask a Gem' step, which will stop working once Gems are removed. Automatic migration to draft skills suggests Google wants to preserve existing customizations rather than force users to rebuild them from scratch.
- Skills rollout starts October 5, 2026 in Workspace and October 13 in the Gemini app.
- Gems become inaccessible for creation/editing by March 2027 (business/enterprise) and June 2027 (education).
- Existing Gems will be automatically converted into draft skills rather than deleted outright.
