GoKawiilNabu Casa renames Home Assistant Cloud to Home Assistant Link
Nabu Casa, the commercial partner behind Home Assistant, has renamed its Home Assistant Cloud service to Home Assistant Link. The company says the service, launched in 2018, lets users remotely access their smart home setup and funds development of the open-source platform through subscription revenue directed to the Open Home Foundation.
GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.
The rebrand appears to distance Nabu Casa from the word 'cloud,' which the company associates with rising subscription costs, outages and data harvesting at major tech firms, suggesting it wants to signal a different, more privacy-focused approach. Because the service funds much of Home Assistant's paid staff and volunteer work, its framing and perceived trustworthiness could matter for the long-term sustainability of the open-source project. The move may also be read as a response to broader consumer frustration with 'cloud' branding across the smart-home industry.
- Home Assistant Cloud has been renamed Home Assistant Link by Nabu Casa.
- Subscription revenue from the service funds the Open Home Foundation, which supports Home Assistant's development.
- Nabu Casa frames the rename as a rejection of 'cloud' practices like price hikes, outages and data harvesting.
