GoKawiilApple adds Sound Glow, default Mac speaker, surround sound to existing HomePod via update
Apple announced a free software update bringing three new features to the existing HomePod (2nd generation), alongside this week's launch of HomePod mini 2, HomeView and a new Apple TV 4K. The update adds Sound Glow lighting effects synced to music, the ability to set HomePod as the default Mac speaker, and support for four-HomePod surround sound when paired with the new Apple TV 4K.
GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.
By extending new features to an existing device rather than requiring a hardware purchase, Apple could keep current HomePod owners engaged with its ecosystem while still driving demand for the new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2 needed for some features. The Mac speaker integration and surround sound setup suggest Apple is pushing HomePod further into whole-home and desktop audio roles, potentially competing more directly with dedicated smart speaker and home theater systems.
- Sound Glow brings album-art-matched lighting effects to HomePod 2 and HomePod mini 2 for Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhones.
- HomePod can become the default Mac speaker on desktops/laptops with Wi-Fi 6E or later.
- Four HomePods paired with the new Apple TV 4K enable a surround sound home theater setup.
Apple HomePod (2nd generation) — With Sound Glow and new default-speaker features rolling out via free software update, now's a great time to add a HomePod to your Apple setup. It delivers rich, room-filling sound and deep integration with iPhone and Mac, making it a smart hub for music and smart home control alike.
