The iPad was built with versatility, modularity, and portability in mind. It is thin, lightweight, powerful enough to run intensive applications, and, with the right accessories, can be modified to fit any need. It can be a note-taking device with the Apple Pencil, it can be a consumption machine with a folio case, and it can be a powerhouse with the right keyboard case. Logitech just dropped the perfect keyboard case for people who are constantly on the move but still need the productivity of a keyboard. Here is what you need to know.
Before we get into my hands-on review, I always like to mention the specs for those who like to compare products on paper. This keyboard case has everything you would want when you are mobile but also brings what you need to be productive.
Detachable Bluetooth keyboard with magnetic stowage
Multi-angle kickstand with a compact footprint
Up to 2 years of battery life (uses replaceable watch batteries)
Easy-switch Bluetooth pairing with 3 devices and auto connection detection
Supports both portrait and landscape modes
iPadOS function shortcut keys
Available in Graphite, Midnight Black, Pale Grey, Lilac, and Sand
So, as you can see, it stacks up nicely when compared to the competition. Some key things to call out here is that they went with replaceable batteries instead of rechargeable, but I actually like this move. You don’t need to bring another cable to charge anything; it lasts 2 years, you get a 1-month warning when the battery is low, and batteries are cheap to replace. I also like how its detachable and connects to three devices with the keyboard.
Hands-on impressions
As someone who considers themselves an iPad Pro power user, my first impression is that the Flip Folio feels refreshingly different. Logitech didn’t try to turn your iPad into a laptop, but if that is what you are looking for, Logitech makes the Combo Touch, and of course, there is the Magic Keyboard. This case was clearly built for people who value portability and freedom over full-on productivity machines. This keyboard case lives in that middle ground where it is modular and portable but can also be used for productivity when needed (even without a trackpad).
The keyboard is full-sized, for the 13-inch model, and the 11-inch model feels surprisingly complete even with its smaller footprint. You can detach it and use it however you want, then magnetically snap it onto the back of the case when you’re done. If you have ever tried to use a 13-inch Magic Keyboard on a budget airline seat tray, then you know how uncomfortable it can get. The fact that the keyboard of the flip folio is detachable and stows away on the stand is a genius design. So when it is in stand mode, the footprint needed is extremely minimal.
Other considerations
There are two other aspects I wanted to bring up about this Flip Folio. First is the new portrait mode that Logitech was showcasing. The magnetic back plate has a small lip that allows you to flip your iPad into portrait mode and leaves room for an iPhone to be placed next to it. I thought this was a very cool idea, it uses a combination of magnets, material friction, and that lip to keep everything in place. It was very stable, but not something i used a ton outside of just trying it. But I can see how it would be useful for some.
Secondly, as I stated above, I am a power user. So for me, I would almost say I need that trackpad to maximize my use with the iPad Pro. I spoke to the product designers, who mentioned that it was a conscious decision to omit a trackpad. They said that if I wanted a trackpad, they had a product for that in the Combo Touch, and that this Folio Flip was made for a slightly different use case, even though there is an overlap. Including a trackpad would have completely changed the case’s design, so for this product, I was OK with leaving the trackpad out.
Pricing & availability
The Flip Folio is available today in Graphite and Midnight Black (Midnight Black is launching exclusively in North America). Three additional colors will be available for the back-to-school season in September: Pale Grey, Lilac, and Sand. The 11‑inch version (for iPad Pro/Air 11‑inch) is priced at $159.99, and the 13‑inch version (for iPad Pro/Air 13‑inch) is priced at $179.99.
Final thoughts
So, who do I think this is for? I believe this is for the person who uses their iPad continuously on the go. Maybe they use it at a desk, at the park, on a bench, at the beach, or on a plane. This is for the person who uses their iPad in handheld mode just as much as they use it in desktop mode. The Flip Folio is smartly modular, incredibly portable, and refreshingly iPad-first in its approach versus trying to make the iPad a laptop. So if you are looking for a modular iPad keyboard case experience that fits most (if not all) of your needs, I highly recommend giving this a shot. If you need something with a trackpad, also give the combo touch a go. Can’t go wrong with either!
