F1 The Movie has shown strong legs at the box office, but Apple’s summer hit is about to get another financial boost: F1 is being re-released in IMAX theaters starting this Friday, with tickets on sale now. Here are the details.
F1 returns to IMAX this Friday, with wider expansion next week
Last month, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond shared some surprise Apple-related news: the company’s F1 movie would be getting a rare IMAX re-release.
Now, Apple has officially confirmed the news and shared new details.
F1 The Movie will return to select IMAX theaters this Friday, August 8, with an even wider expansion on IMAX and other large screen formats starting next Friday, August 15.
From Apple’s press release:
“Audiences around the world have embraced ‘F1 The Movie’ as an adrenaline-pumping big screen experience, and its rerelease in IMAX is a testament to the global popularity of the film,” said Matt Dentler, head of features, Apple Original Films. “Joe, Jerry, Brad, Lewis and the visionary team behind ‘F1 The Movie’ have delivered a summer blockbuster that blends heart with action, and we can’t wait to give moviegoers another chance to see it in IMAX.”
Apple notes that F1 has performed especially well on IMAX screens. IMAX accounted for 23 percent of its North American opening weekend and over 19 percent of its global debut.
The increasing popularity of IMAX screens in general is no doubt deserving of credit. But so too is the unique nature of the film which was intentionally designed for premium theatrical formats.
Here’s a bit of context around F1’s IMAX appeal:
“F1 The Movie” was shot with more than a dozen newly designed IMAX-certified digital cameras strategically positioned to capture the speed, precision and intensity of racing like never before, including Pitt driving at 180 mph. The film is presented entirely in IMAX’s exclusive 1.90:1 expanded aspect ratio and with a custom sound mix tailored to IMAX’s acoustician-designed sound system, featuring the industry’s largest speakers, laser-aligned for pinpoint audio precision. Director Kosinski worked closely with IMAX, including reviewing camera tests at IMAX headquarters during preproduction, and made specific creative and technical decisions to deliver a movie designed for the IMAX Experience.
Tickets for the F1 re-release are available now through the standard theatrical sales channels.
