In the wake of Superman taking over the summer, Warner Bros. is maintaining its momentum at DC Studios, announcing that Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman Part II will begin filming next spring, aiming for an October 2027 release window. According to Variety, today’s update comes following a Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders meeting (ahead of the company’s split once more into two companies, Warner Bros. and, well, Discovery, next year), where executives lauded the financial success of James Gunn’s Superman, earning just south of $550 million worldwide and formally kickstarting a new era for the DC Universe in the realm of film and TV. In their merriment diving into money like Scrooge McDuck, Warner Bros. also gave a rundown of its queue of superhero film projects, confirming The Batman Part II‘s production update in the process. “In film, James Gunn is busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family, including Supergirl (2026), Clayface (2026), and the next Wonder Woman,” Warner Bros. said. “In addition, The Batman II (2027) is preparing to begin shooting next spring, among several other projects in development. The 10-year vision for the DC universe also includes an exciting array of television projects, including The Penguin, the upcoming new season of Peacemaker, and the debut of Lanterns in 2026. In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise will increasingly overlay across the studio’s broader efforts: from film and TV to consumer products, games, experiences, and social.” It goes without saying that DC fans have been waiting for the sequel to the Caped Crusader film for a minute. The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, was first released back in March 2022. Grossing $722 million worldwide at the box office, Warner Bros. announced sequel plans that April. The film also famously saw delays, leading fans and actor Pattinson to worry about whether he’d be too old by the time filming commenced. Fortunately, The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, not only satisfied fans waiting for more Reeves-flavored comic book drama, but also cemented itself as one of the best DC shows ever, tiding folks over during their Batman drought. Although Batman’s place in James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe has proved to be the studio head’s biggest problem—especially with Gunn confirming that Matt Reeves’ films fall under the “Elseworlds” banner, separate from DC Studios’ 10-year continuity plan—Gunn has publicly backed Reeves. Amid his Superman media blitz, Gunn has taken time for fireside chats to reassure fans and address concerns about The Batman Part II’s future. Granted, his updates were tantamount to telling folks to hop off Reeves’ nuts and let him cook. In late June, The Batman Part II showed signs of progress when Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin shared a photo of the script. Gunn mentioned that he saw the script in July and thought it was “great.” With the bat due to be out of the cave soon, it’ll be interesting to see the pendulum swing the other way as folks start pestering Gunn about the status of scripts for other upcoming DC projects. Still, it’s a relief to see DC Studios prioritizing solid scripts over being beholden to a shoot-as-you-write style of filmmaking. We’re eager to find out which grunge band Bruce Wayne will be brooding to in the Batmobile come 2027.
