New Poll Finds That Americans Loathe AI

A new poll by the Pew Research Center has found that Americans are getting extremely fed up with artificial intelligence in their daily lives. A whopping 53 percent of just over 5,000 US adults polled in June think that AI will "worsen people’s ability to think creatively." Fifty percent say AI will deteriorate our ability to form meaningful relationships, while only five percent believe the reverse. While 29 percent of respondents said they believe AI will make people better problem-solvers,

Nvidia Appeals to Trump With a $5 Billion Intel Stake

Nvidia became one of competitor Intel’s largest shareholders on Thursday with a $5 billion stake. The two companies will collaborate to jointly develop PC chips and data centers. Once the dominant name in chips, Intel had been in a steady decline in recent years as it failed to keep up with peers like Nvidia in the AI race. The company started its official turnaround strategy last year by ousting its previous CEO Pat Gelsinger, who was eventually replaced by Lip Bu-Tan a few months later. Las

Nvidia Just Suffered a Huge Blow in China

For years, the Chinese tech industry has been dependent on the US and its allies for the advanced semiconductors — colloquially known as "chips" — that undergird the AI industry. As the "AI race" has heated up to a fever pitch, chips have become its chief commodity — and bottleneck, as companies compete to build out the infrastructure they believe will run a multi-trillion dollar market. At the moment, the undisputed leader in AI chips is Nvidia, which has rocketed it from modestly-sized gamin

Meta launches Hyperscape, technology to turn real-world spaces into VR

Although today’s Meta Connect developer conference was largely about new smart glasses, the social networking company did announce a handful of metaverse updates during Wednesday’s keynote. The company announced that Hyperscape Capture is now rolling out in Early Access, meaning Quest device owners will b

Nvidia AI chip challenger Groq raises even more than expected, hits $6.9B valuation

AI chip startup Groq confirmed Wednesday that it raised a fresh $750 million in funding at a post-money valuation of $6.9 billion. This topped the rumored numbers when word leaked in July that Groq was raising. At that time, reports suggested that the raise would be about $600 million, at near a $6 billion valuation. Anthropic Report Finds Dire News About AI's Effects on Job Market

As businesses across the economy rush to adopt AI, a new report from OpenAI's competitor Anthropic reveals what the tech is really being used for: instead of helping augment human labor, companies are mainly using AI to automate their jobs. In numbers, an overwhelming 77 percent of businesses using Anthropic's Claude AI software showed signs of automation, like "full task delegation," according to the report released by the company this week. Only 12 percent of AI usage appeared to leverage the

China tells its tech companies they can’t buy AI chips from Nivida

Nvidia just got shut out of the Chinese market — this time by the Chinese government instead of the US. China’s internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, banned domestic tech companies from buying Nvidia AI chips on Wednesday, as first reported by the Financial Times. The agency also told tech companies including ByteDance and Alibaba to stop testing and ordering Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D server, a device designed specifically for the market in China. Beijing had previously dis

Is Data Modeling Dead?

There's Something Psychologically Bizarre About AI Executives

For many hopeful entrepreneurs, founding a successful company is a ticket to the top, the lofty promise of fame and fortune. Yet for a growing number of up-and-coming AI executives, a successful tech startup is the end in itself — not a step toward luxury, but a rejection of it. As the Wall Street Journal reports, the newest class of young founders flocking to the Bay Area are eschewing the frivolities enjoyed by their peers in favor of a proudly minimalist, monk-like existence. "Why would I

The Download: measuring returns on R&D, and AI’s creative potential

Given the draconian cuts to US federal funding for science, it’s worth asking some hard-nosed money questions: How much should we be spending on R&D? How much value do we get out of such investments, anyway? To answer that, in several recent papers, economists have approached this issue in clever new ways. And, though they ask slightly different questions, their conclusions share a bottom line: R&D is, in fact, one of the better long-term investments that the government can make. Read the full

How to measure the returns on R&D spending

Sure, it’s easy to argue for the importance of spending on science by pointing out that many of today’s most useful technologies had their origins in government-funded R&D. The internet, CRISPR, GPS—the list goes on and on. All true. But this argument ignores all the technologies that received millions in government funding and haven’t gone anywhere—at least not yet. We still don’t have DNA computers or molecular electronics. Never mind the favorite examples cited by contrarian politicians of se

Trump's Biggest Fans Furious at His Embrace of AI
