Rietta deploys emergency patch for Rails ActiveStorage flaw CVE-2026-66066 same day it surfaced

Security firm Rietta rolled out an emergency hotfix across its client base on July 29, 2026, after a Ruby on Rails ActiveStorage vulnerability—later named KindaRails2Shell and tracked as CVE-2026-66066—jumped from an unrated update to a 9.5/10 CVSS severity score within hours. The flaw, discovered by researchers at Ethiack, allows arbitrary file read and remote code execution through variant processing in Active Storage, a core Rails component used in Rails 8 and newer.

Ancient sheeppox DNA recovered from medieval parchment manuscripts

Researchers extracted and sequenced viral DNA preserved in the animal-skin parchment of medieval manuscripts, tracing sheeppox virus's evolutionary history back roughly 3,500 years. The study, published in Science Advances and led by University College Dublin's Louis L'Hôte, demonstrates that parchment can act as a repository for ancient pathogen genomes, not just host DNA.

Fully machine-checked Lean 4 proof of Fermat's Last Theorem released as research artifact

A complete formalization of Fermat's Last Theorem has been written and verified in the Lean 4 proof assistant, built atop the Mathlib library and following the Frey-Serre-Ribet-Wiles-Taylor-Wiles argument. The repository builds all 60,475 modules from scratch, with every declaration checked by the Lean kernel, and the final theorem relies solely on Lean's three standard axioms rather than any sorry or added axiom. An independent tool, leanprover/comparator, confirmed the proved statement matches a separately stated Mathlib-only challenge and that the entire proof chain replays correctly.

Mullvad to shut down public encrypted DNS servers, endorses Quad9

Mullvad announced it will shut down its public DNS-over-HTTPS servers, which it has operated since 2022, and redirect support to Quad9 instead. The company said running a privacy-focused public DNS service is highly specialized work best left to Quad9's dedicated team, and it will now fund Quad9 rather than duplicate its efforts. Mullvad Browser users on default settings will be automatically switched to Quad9, while manual configurations must be updated before November 2, 2026.
