I'm a Windows user, but the MacBook Air M4 could be my new primary laptop at this price

MacBook Air M4 in Sky Blue Kyle Kucharski/ZDNET When Apple announced the MacBook Air M4 earlier this year, it was clear that the laptop would be an incremental upgrade from last year's model, with the latest in Apple silicon and a host of software and AI-powered features. The fact that the 13-inch version was $100 less was a pleasant surprise, however, positioning it as a competitive choice in the current market. I had a chance to test out the new MacBook Air M4, and my initial findings reflec

Explore 20 years of Mac UI design through emulations of a single app

What’s a Mac app that was included on the very first Macintosh back in 1984 – long before the internet – and still exists on today’s machines, albeit with a different name? Designer and author Marcin Wichery has not only traced the first 20 years of development of that app, but has also included emulators that let you experience it for yourself … The app in question: Control Panel, more recently renamed as Settings. That might not sound like the most fascinating of apps to track across time,

The MacBook Upgrade Program that starts at $33.28/month

The MacBook is one of the most powerful tools of the modern age. Most people will spend years of their lives in front of their computer. So it makes sense to have a great one. But there’s a newer option…and it’s growing fast among profes

Only on Nantucket: The Curious Case of the "Stolen" Mercedes

Good questions. And as Monday came and went without any sign of the missing Mercedes, the mystery deepened, and more theories continued to pour in: had it been hotwired and moved to a chop shop? Was it used for a joy ride and ditched in some remote corner of the island? The family asked the Current to share a photo of the vehicle, and the fact that it had been reported stolen. The post set off a deluge of messages along the lines of: "Who steals a car on Nantucket? Where are they going to go?"

Repasting a MacBook

You should repaste your MacBook (but don't) My favorite memory of my M1 Pro MacBook Pro was the whole sensation of “holy crap, you never hear the fans in this thing”, which was very novel in 2021. Four years later, this MacBook Pro is still a delight. It’s the longest I’ve ever owned a laptop, and while I’d love to pick up the new M4 goodness, this dang thing still seems to just shrug at basically anything I throw at it. Video editing, code compiling, CAD models, the works. (My desire to updat

Now That Intel Is Cooked, Apple Doesn’t Need to Release New MacBooks Every Year

Covering tech news, you sometimes feel like the million-mile-per-hour footrace of Silicon Valley will inevitably result in a Wile E. Coyote-style calamity. There’s a part of me that craves a little more sincerity and willingness for self-reflection. When we actually receive it, the result is a little more cringe-worthy. Intel’s new boss, Lip-Bu Tan, reportedly told staff the company was—effectively—cooked. That doesn’t sound great, but for one of Intel’s once-biggest partners, Apple, it may be a

Tandy Corporation, Part 3 Becoming IBM Compatible

This article follows Part 1 of the Tandy Corporation’s history, which covers the company’s founding and the lead up to and launch of the TRS-80, and Part 2, which covers the TRS-80 Models I, II, III, CoCo, and Pocket Computer. When the TRS-80 Model I was released in 1977, the microcomputer market was small, centered around hobbyists, and many computer owners had built their machines from off-the-shelf components and/or kits. Tandy, Apple, and Commodore completely changed the market, but even th
