Internet Archive’s big battle with music publishers ends in settlement

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit where music publishers sued the Internet Archive over the Great 78 Project, an effort to preserve early music recordings that only exist on brittle shellac records. No details of the settlement have so far been released, but a court filing on Monday confirmed that the Internet Archive and UMG Recordings, Capitol Records, Sony Music Entertainment, and other record labels "have settled this matter." More details may come in the next 45 days, when parties

Apple MacOS Tahoe 26: Top New Features to Try Today

Photograph: Luke Larsen If you use a Mac every day like I do, though, a lot of the smaller changes are what give it its distinctly fresh feeling. The icons are what you'll notice first, which is right where the controversy begins. The iconic (heh) Finder icon has, indeed, been tampered with—though they haven't been flipped like in the original concept. The colors are slightly different, though, and there's a nice, modern border around it to match the other icons. The corner radius on nearly ev

WIRED Roundup: How Charlie Kirk Changed Conservative Media

Zoë Schiffer: So where does that leave traditional right-wing media, like Fox News, for example? Is this a replacement of that or is it working in tandem? Jake Lahut: I think it's more in tandem. Fox's programming was dominated by Kirk's assassination last night. I think that for a lot of the mainstay Fox personalities, people like Charlie Kirk, and I guess in the Turning Point USA broader cinematic universe, these younger figures are really important, actually, for I think a lot of the more es

As the startup world descends on San Francisco for TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 — happening October 27–29 at Moscone West — one question looms large: Does building in Silicon Valley still give founders an edge? With 10,000+ startup and VC leaders gathering for this milestone Disrupt, the conversation around access, geography, and opportunity has never been more timely. On the Builders Stage, Anh-Tho Chuong (Lago), David Hall (Revolution), and Tawni Nazario-Cranz (SignalFire) lead a must-attend sessi

Tesla Engineer Quits, Roasts Elon Musk in Spectacular Fashion

After a tenure of eight years, a Tesla engineer has quit the company — and directed a seething missive toward his boss, Elon Musk. "I do need to address the elephant in the room: the main reason I'm leaving is that I think Elon has dealt huge damage to Tesla's mission (and to the health of democratic institutions in several countries)," Giorgio Balestrieri, a staff algorithms engineer who joined in 2017, wrote in a scathing LinkedIn post last week. "Beyond that, Elon's leadership and decision m

Calif. construction worker unofficially broke a fabled world record

It was a muggy July day in Santa Cruz and life could not have been more mundane for Alessandro “Alo” Slebir. The 24-year-old was pounding wooden concrete forms into a missing section of sidewalk. Cars raced by on a suburban highway as a neighbor walked over, looked at Slebir and asked, “Should I move my car?” “Hey, no worries, you’re fine! You’re not in the way,” Slebir said, in his characteristically friendly demeanor before returning to his hammer. You wouldn’t know it from the work boots or

iOS 26 Just Gave Your AirPods a Bunch of Free Upgrades

Apple’s iOS 26 is finally out, and with its release, there’s a lot to officially unpack (sorry, beta features don’t count). But it’s not all about the iPhone. Buried in all those fea

Researchers revive the pinhole camera for next-gen infrared imaging

This article has been reviewed according to Science X's editorial process and policies . Editors have highlighted the following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility: Researchers use laser light to form a tiny "optical pinhole" inside a nonlinear crystal, which also turns the infrared image into a visible image that a traditional silicon-based camera sensor can detect. With this setup, the researchers captured clear, wide-depth images without using any lenses, even in very low lig

Boring work needs tension

We can make our work exciting by chasing the every day tension. We are all moved by great movies, cinematography, and stories. Watching them is fun because you can imagine yourself resonating with a character. You are thrilled by the tension the story creates and curious how it will be resolved. Many find software development a dull job where you have to write exactly what your PM or client asks for. It’s exciting at first, but it can become boring after a few iterations. Whatever doesn’t exc

The unbearable sameness of Liquid Glass

Liquid Glass is a neat party trick. The new design system, which was built for nearly all of Apple’s products and is rolling out this week, is built on the idea that interfaces should be three-dimensional: in the world of Liquid Glass, buttons and menus sit on top of whatever you’re doing or looking at, changing color and refracting digital light like they’re physical objects. It’s meant to feel like glass does in the real world. It’s visually very impressive, and it all kind of works! You insta

Then, it proceeded to announce new Apple Intelligence features, making sure to showcase only the features it was sure

Self-Assembly Gets Automated in Reverse of 'Game of Life'

Alexander Mordvintsev showed me two clumps of pixels on his screen. They pulsed, grew and blossomed into monarch butterflies. As the two butterflies grew, they smashed into each other, and one got the worst of it; its wing withered away. But just as it seemed like a goner, the mutilated butterfly did a kind of backflip and grew a new wing like a salamander regrowing a lost leg. Mordvintsev, a research scientist at Google in Zurich, had not deliberately bred his virtual butterflies to regenerate

Liquid Glass on iOS 26 Is Here to Stay, Whether You Like It or Not

The old debate of form over function remains true with iOS 26 and the final version that launched for all iPhones today. There’s all but a faint whiff of that long-promised Apple Intelligence, though you’ll still find plenty to love and more to complain about with the switch from iOS 18 all the way to the “26” generation. Remember to set aside some storage on iPhone, as the update will demand a good chunk. iOS 26 showed up as 6GB for me on my iPhone 14 Pro, coming from version iOS 18.6. (Apple

Apple's Sleeper Hit of Its Fall Lineup? The Apple Watch SE 3

At Apple's September event, the new iPhone 17 models and AirPods Pro 3 took much of the attention, plus the super-thin iPhone Air and updated Apple Watch Ultra 3. But in this frugal girl's book, the real headliner was the one that snuck in as the real underdog of Apple's entire fall lineup: the Apple Watch SE 3. I usually overlook Apple's SE model because it lacks many of the powerhouse features of the flagship and Ultra editions, like an always-on display or temperature tracking. But this year
