Christopher Eccleston’s ‘Doctor Who’ Regeneration Remains One of the Show’s Best

Twenty years ago this week, the first season of the revived era of Doctor Who came to an end with “The Parting of the Ways,” as did the tenure of Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor. Ready to sacrifice it all to stop the Daleks, the Ninth Doctor’s final moments remain a vital moment in Doctor Who history. It was the first time in decades since Doctor Who had asked its audience to trust in the magic of the series’ defining trick to survival and re-invention: the magic of regeneration itself. Ec

Google looks likely to lose appeal against record $4.7 billion EU fine

Google suffered a setback Thursday after an advisor to the European Union's top court recommended it dismiss the tech giant's appeal against a record 4.1-billion-euro ($4.7 billion) antitrust fine. Juliane Kokott, advocate general at the European Court of Justice, advised the court to throw out Google's appeal and confirm the fine, which was reduced in 2022 to 4.125 billion euros from 4.34 billion euros previously by the EU's General Court. "In her Opinion delivered today, Advocate General Kok

‘Surpassing all my expectations’: Midjourney releases first AI video model amid Disney, Universal lawsuit

Popular AI image generation service Midjourney has launched its first AI video generation model V1, marking a pivotal shift for the company from image generation toward full multimedia content creation. Starting today, Midjourney’s nearly 20 million users can animate images via the website, transforming their generated or uploaded stills into 5-second long clips with options for extending the generation longer up to 20 seconds (in 5 second bursts), and guiding them with text. With the launch,

Deezer says 70% of AI music streams on its service are fake

In brief: The problem of AI-generated music on streaming platforms being "listened" to by AI is so bad on Deezer, up to seven out of every 10 streams of AI tracks are fraudulent, according to the company. The practice can be a lucrative one: in 2024, a man was arrested over claims that he conned music services out of $12 million using this method. The French streaming giant said that AI-generated music accounts for just 0.5% of streams on the platform. However, its own analysis shows that 70% o

What happens when you feed AI nothing

If you stumbled across Terence Broad’s AI-generated artwork (un)stable equilibrium on YouTube, you might assume he’d trained a model on the works of the painter Mark Rothko — the earlier, lighter pieces, before his vision became darker and suffused with doom. Like early-period Rothko, Broad’s AI-generated images consist of simple fields of pure color, but they’re morphing, continuously changing form and hue. But Broad didn’t train his AI on Rothko; he didn’t train it on any data at all. By hack

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy tells workers: AI will replace some of you

A hot potato: CEOs love to sing the praises of generative AI while tiptoeing around the fact it's going to cost people their jobs. But Amazon boss Andy Jassy has just said the quiet part out loud, admitting that the technology will reduce the company's corporate workforce over the next few years. In a message sent to employees this week, Jassy said generative AI was a "once-in-a-lifetime" technology that completely changes what's possible for customers and businesses. Jassy went on to highligh

Scientists once hoarded pre-nuclear steel; now we’re hoarding pre-AI content

Former Cloudflare executive John Graham-Cumming recently announced that he launched a website, lowbackgroundsteel.ai, that treats pre-AI, human-created content like a precious commodity—a time capsule of organic creative expression from a time before machines joined the conversation. "The idea is to point to sources of text, images and video that were created prior to the explosion of AI-generated content," Graham-Cumming wrote on his blog last week. The reason? Strangers in the Middle of a City: The John and Jane Does of L.A. Medical Center

He had a buzz cut and brown eyes, a stubbly beard and a wrestler’s build. He did not have a wallet or phone; he could not state his name. He arrived at Los Angeles General Medical Center one cloudy day this winter just as thousands of people do every year: alone and unknown. Some 130,000 people are brought each year to L.A. General’s emergency room. Many are unconscious, incapacitated or too unwell to tell staff who they are. Nearly all these Jane and John Does are identified within 48 hours

Microsoft partners with AMD on next generation of Xbox

Microsoft announced a strategic, multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including the next-generation Xbox consoles. The company said it will deliver deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay, and AI-powered experiences — grounded in a platform designed for players, not tied to a single store or device, and fully compatible with your existing Xbox game library, said Sarah Bond, president of Xbox. It’s no surprise, considering AMD has also partnered

CarPlay’s ‘next generation’ is already looking better than we thought

CarPlay’s evolution has in several ways been a disappointment since the “next generation” of CarPlay was first previewed in 2022. But all of a sudden, in the span of a mere month, CarPlay’s future looks brighter than it has in years—in part because of a redefinition of what that future will be. The next generation of CarPlay is no longer just CarPlay Ultra CarPlay’s previously announced “next generation” seemed like it would never arrive. But now, it’s finally here—with a twist. And arguably,

AI copyright anxiety will hold back creativity

During a later visit to a Picasso exhibit in Milan, I came across a famous informational diagram by the art historian Alfred Barr, mapping how modernist movements like Cubism evolved from earlier artistic traditions. Picasso is often held up as one of modern art’s most original and influential figures, but Barr’s chart made plain the many artists he drew from—Goya, El Greco, Cézanne, African sculptors. This made me wonder: If a generative AI model had been fed all those inputs, might it have pro

UK watchdog fines 23andMe over 2023 data breach

In Brief The U.K. data protection watchdog has fined 23andMe £2.31 million ($3.1m) for failing to protect U.K. residents’ personal and genetic data prior to its 2023 data breach. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said on Tuesday it has fined the genetic testing company as it “did not have additional verification steps for users to access and download their raw genetic data” at the time of its cyberattack. In 2023, hackers stole private data on more than 6.9 million users’ over a mon

Scientists Discover the Key to Axolotls’ Ability to Regenerate Limbs

The axolotl seems like something out of science fiction. This perpetually youthful-looking Mexican salamander possesses a superpower that defies biology as we know it: the ability to regenerate entire limbs, parts of its heart, and even its spinal cord. But how does an amputated limb know whether to regenerate an entire arm from the shoulder down or just a hand from the wrist? This mystery of “positional identity” has fascinated scientists for decades. A team at Northeastern University, led by

The Linear No Threshold model says that there is no safe level of radiation exposure. There is overwhelming evidence it is false, yet it inspires the ALARA principle, which makes nuclear power unaffordable worldwide. Read the lead article from Issue 19 of Works in Progress. Anne Wojcicki’s nonprofit reaches deal to acquire 23andMe

Beleaguered genetic testing company 23andMe announced Friday that it has reached an agreement to sell itself to a nonprofit led by the company’s co-founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki. Following a massive cyberattack in 2023 and a related lawsuit settlement, 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in March, with Wojcicki resigning in order to become an independent bidder for the company. But pharmaceutical company Regeneron was announced as the company’s acquirer with a $256 million bid. According to th

23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki will regain control of embattled DNA company after all

In a surprise twist, 23andMe founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki is set to regain control of the DNA company's assets, according to a press release from 23andMe. In May, a company called Regeneron bought 23andMe for $256 million in a bankruptcy auction, but Wojcicki's nonprofit, TTAM Research Institute, was able to reopen bidding with an "unsolicited offer" of $305 million, The Wall Street Journal reports. A bankruptcy judge agreed to reopen bidding on 23andMe under the condition that Regenero

Signed by 20 other Democratic members of Congress, the letters were sent to Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and TTAM Research Institute, which have put forth separate bids to buy 23andMe. In the letters, they ask Regeneron and TTAM if they will continue to give custome
