UK backing down on Apple encryption backdoor after pressure from US

Sir Keir Starmer’s government is seeking a way out of a clash with the Trump administration over the UK’s demand that Apple provide it with access to secure customer data, two senior British officials have told the Financial Times. The officials both said the Home Office, which ordered the tech giant in January to grant access to its most secure cloud storage system, would probably have to retreat in the face of pressure from senior leaders in Washington, including Vice President JD Vance. “Th

Report: iOS 27 to focus on new features for upcoming iPhone Fold

Act surprised: Apple is soon expected to formally kick off development of iOS 27. This year, Apple will have a big task: updating the iOS experience in preparation for its most radical new iPhone yet. Details are unclear, but iOS 27 will unsurprisingly focus heavily on optimizing software for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. This will include new features specifically for the iPhone Fold as well as ensuring that iOS as we know it today is optimized for the new form factor. In the latest edition

Apple details how it trained its new AI models: 4 interesting highlights

During WWDC25, Apple announced new versions of its on-device and cloud-based foundation models. Now, they have published a tech report detailing how those models were trained, optimized, and evaluated. And the report includes some genuinely interesting under-the-hood tidbits. In a comprehensive document called “Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models – Tech Report 2025“, the company walks through multiple aspects of the new models, including their architecture, data sources, pre-training,

British government set to back down on secret iCloud backdoor after US pressure

We learned earlier this year that the British government had secretly ordered Apple to create a backdoor into encrypted data for all iCloud users worldwide. Specifically, it wanted a way to see personal data protected by Apple’s introduction of Advanced Data Protection (ADP), which extended end-to-end encryption to almost all iCloud data, meaning not even the iPhone maker could access it. Apple has been fighting the secret order in secret court hearings, but it now appears that the US governmen

Apple Sports app expands soccer coverage and launches in a new country

The Apple Sports app, which allows users to track sports scores in real-time, today expanded its coverage of soccer. With the new 3.1 update, fans of the FA Community Shield soccer tournament can now follow along inside Apple Sports. Also notable is that the app is now available to download in Mexico. This means fans of Liga MX can now use the app for the first time to track the performance of their local teams, as well as how they fare in the MLS Leagues Cup. Apple also said the app has incre

Here’s how Apple Intelligence keeps privacy in mind versus the competition

Artificial intelligence has obviously been the industry craze for the past couple years. While large language models are incredibly capable, they’ve always come with a bit of a compromise: privacy. Ultimately, you’re still using a model hosted in the cloud, and all of your conversations are stored on some server. Apple’s always had privacy at the core of its products – so in the months leading up to the debut of Apple’s AI features, many people wondered: how would Apple handle it? Today, we del

Apple's next iPad Pro will reportedly get two front-facing cameras

The iPad Pro with the M5 chip is expected to be just as easy to use for selfies in a landscape or portrait orientation. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple will add a second front-facing camera on the portrait edge of the upcoming iPad Pro that's expected to launch later this year. It may seem like a small quality-of-life upgrade, but it means the iPad Pro can use either camera to center the subject for selfies or FaceTime calls. Compared to the previous iPad models, the upcoming iPad P

Java was not underhyped in 1997 (2021)

Java Criminally Underhyped? Not Back in 1997. Earlier today, a fun little moment of Twitter serendipity alerted me to an article by Jackson Roberts, a computer science student at the University of Colorado, entitled “Java is criminally underhyped”. It’s a really interesting article, and Jackson’s observations correlate with a lot of my own thinking about languages and platforms, although I am squarely in the .NET / CLR camp on that particular front. But Jackson ends his article: I am curious

Report: M5 iPad Pro to have dual front-facing cameras

With last year’s M4 iPad Pro, Apple made a long-awaited change to the design: it moved the front-facing camera from the top to the side. According to Bloomberg today, Apple has another big change to the iPad Pro’s front-facing camera in store for the M5 update coming later this year. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports: Apple is apparently adding a second, portrait-side front-facing camera to the upcoming M5 iPad Pro, presumably so FaceTimers and selfie fans

Renewed iPad Pros pair nicely with iPadOS 26, and they’re quite affordable right now

A short while ago, I was browsing Apple deals on Amazon (as one does) – and something stuck out to me. High-end iPad Pros, particularly 12.9-inch models, are surprisingly cheap. I saw M1 models with 1TB and cellular for nearly $600. Given the recent iPadOS 26 overhaul that makes the iPad much more Mac-like, I figured these deals would be worth a share. While renewed iPad deals are the focus here because of their affordability, new iPad deals are also mentioned at the end. Renewed M1 iPad Pro d

Key takeaways: The rumored iPhone 17 Pro is expected to be released in early September. The Pro is rumored to be getting a scratch-resistant antireflective display. Colors could include black, silver, dark blue and orange. The new iPhone is likely just a couple of months away from release, and rumors about an iPhone 17 Pro have been ramping up. Best iPhone in 2025: Here's Which Apple Phone You Should Buy

Phone makers promise varying lengths of long-term software and security support, ranging from just one year to as many as seven. But don’t be fooled by how many cameras a phone has. More is not necessarily better. Phones are big in general, with the smallest ones having a 6.1-inch screen and larger models topping out at 6.8 inches. That

Apple Sues the YouTuber Who Leaked iOS 26

Leaks are a constant part of big product news cycles, particularly for companies like Apple. Online soothsayers like Jon Prosser and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman have long predicted the content of upcoming Apple announcements, citing anonymous sources from within the company to glean glimpses of what’s next. They have been correct often enough to become a real pain for the Cupertino company. Now, Apple has seized upon an opportunity to fight back against leaks. In a complaint filed Thursday in US fe

HSBC note says Apple’s AI fumble may stretch iPhone upgrade cycle

In a new note to investors, HSBC says that the slow rollout of the AI features Apple introduced at WWDC 2024 has so far “failed to trigger significant improvement in user experience,” and that unless Apple gets back on track, users could end up pushing off their next iPhone upgrade. Here are the details. According to the note (via MacDailyNews), “the iPhone still represents about half of Apple’s sales,” but “initial hopes that AI would accelerate the renewal cycle have been short-lived,” as the

It’s Official: Apple Needs to Drop a New Version of AirPods ASAP

Remember AirPods? You probably do, because they’re literally everywhere, all the time, but if you don’t, it’s because Apple has seemingly neglected its hyper-popular wireless earbuds for a while now—or it’s at least failed to give us a model that actually counts as an upgrade. While AirPods 4 were released in 2024, the only notable upgrades back then were USB-C charging (hardly groundbreaking) and a new H2 chip that most people will probably overlook. That means the last real upgrade was actuall

Apple sues YouTuber who leaked iOS 26’s new “Liquid Glass” software redesign

In January, YouTuber Jon Prosser posted a video to his Front Page Tech channel that claimed to be “your very first look at iOS 19,” the operating system that Apple would announce as iOS 26 a few months later. Though Prosser claimed he “could not show the real video of what I saw” because he wanted to protect his source, the rest of the video showed a mock-up for a redesigned version of the Camera app, which ended up being a preview of the company-wide “Liquid Glass” redesign that Apple would sh

The Folding iPhone Is Getting Real (and Might Use Samsung Parts)

This may be the final year without a folding iPhone. New reports this week suggest that Apple will launch the long-rumored folding iPhone in 2026. Last year, Bloomberg reported that

Apple sues leaker Jon Prosser for allegedly stealing iOS 26 info from an employee

Apple is suing leaker Jon Prosser and a codefendant for misappropriation of trade secrets related to YouTube videos from earlier this year that depicted mockups of iOS 26 (which was, at the time, expected to be called iOS 19 ). In the suit, which Apple filed at a district court in the Northern District of California, the company claims Prosser and Michael Ramacciotti "conspired to break into an Apple employee’s development iPhone to take Apple’s trade secrets." Per the filing , which was obtain
