It's been almost 30 years since Mission: Impossible hit cinemas in 1996 as an adaptation of the 1966 television series of the same name. The Brian De Palma-directed film, starring Tom Cruise, was a critical success and kickstarted a franchise so successful that MI movies are still coming out more than two decades later. When the first movie came out I was extremely excited to see it and borrowed the VHS tape from a neighbor. Flash forward to 2000 and I made it my mission to see the sequel, MI2,

Murray Gell-Mann won a Nobel Prize for his work on the interaction between the physical world's fundamental building blocks. These tiny particles can be combined to create different materials. What kind of combinations are possible? Gell-Mann quipped that "Everything not forbidden is compulsory." That quip is now known as the "Totalitarian Principle" of quantum mechanics. In simple terms, it means that in a fast-moving evolutionary environment, anything that is not explicitly prevented by the l

The Mission: Impossible film franchise has always dabbled in the, well, impossible. We've seen Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt climb his way up the Burj Khalifa, have a motorcycle joust to prevent the spread of a bioweapon and hang off the side of an airplane. Even the most grounded entry, Brian DePalma's 1996 Mission: Impossible, featured Cruise leaping off of an exploding helicopter onto a train in the Chunnel. But with the previous film, Dead Reckoning, and this year's follow-up Final Reckoning, the

With Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the franchise has finally made good on its title and accomplished the impossible. That mission, which we’re forced to accept, is watching a new installment that doesn’t live up to the high standards of the usually stellar series. The Final Reckoning has all the elements of a great Mission: Impossible movie—action set pieces beyond your wildest dreams, world-saving stakes, all with a globe-trotting, ticking clock narrative—but never the right balanc

Less than a month out from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Paramount is fully spinning up the marketing machine. Tickets go on sale on Monday, April 28, and there’s a new series of character posters featuring the film’s main and supporting players. In addition to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt—hanging off the side of a biplane, as he tends to do—there are posters for Benji, Luther, Grace, Degas, Paris, Gabriel, and Briggs, all returning from Dead Reckoning (née Part One). There are also

We have solved a traveling salesman problem (TSP) to walk to 81,998 bars in South Korea. The problem was created using the Open Source Routing Machine (OSRM) to build a table of the 3,361,795,003 point-to-point travel times, one for each pair of bar locations. Our computation produced a tour together with a proof that it is a shortest-possible route to visit all 81,998 stops when measured with the OSRM times. It would be a very long pub crawl. The total walking time for the round trip is 15,386

With the last Mission: Impossible film, Dead Reckoning, the long-running franchise officially entered science fiction territory by making intelligent AI its villain. We've seen Tom Cruise's Ethan hunt jump off of buildings and hang from the side of planes, but how can he fight a computer program? The latest trailer for the series' next film, and potentially the last to feature Hunt, doesn't answer that question, but clearly it will involve even more death-defying stunts (like hanging on to a fli

Here’s the trailer for Chris McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, finally out after its CinemaCon presentation last week as part of Paramount Pictures showcase. Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is so close on his currently very impossible mission and it’s always knuckle bracing to see that man run to save the world. And boy can he run. There’s a lot to pick up on from where we left off in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Cruise is going to really come up against even more

Mission: Impossible as a movie franchise is nearly 30 years old, and the next entry, The Final Reckoning , is due out in May. What better way to celebrate it and its Tom Cruise-ness with a museum exhibit? Per Variety, the Museum of Moving Image (MoMI) in Astoria, NY is launching a “Story and Spectacle” initiative for the franchise, with a special focus on Cruise’s commitment to the stunts in each Mission: Impossible. Sections will cover a major stunt or setpiece in each individual film—like the

Fans of a classic anime series sought to work out how long it would take to the watch a 14-episode series in every possible order as efficiently as possible. When a fan of a cult anime series wanted to watch its episodes in every possible order, they asked a question that had perplexed combinatorial mathematicians for years Math solutions can be found in surprising places, including the dark realms of the Internet. In 2011 an anonymous poster on the now infamously controversial image board 4ch

When you look at your surrounding environment, it might seem like you’re living on a flat plane. After all, this is why you can navigate a new city using a map: a flat piece of paper that represents all the places around you. This is likely why some people in the past believed the earth to be flat. But most people now know that is far from the truth. You live on the surface of a giant sphere, like a beach ball the size of the Earth with a few bumps added. The surface of the sphere and the plane
