Apple’s ‘Awe dropping’ September event is just a few days away, taking place on Tuesday, September 9th. One of the wildcard products that we might see this Tuesday is AirTag 2. You may wonder, what’s so exciting about a new version of the AirTag? Well, there’s a couple of noteworthy upgrades to keep your eyes peeled for.
What’s new with AirTag 2
AirTag initially debuted in April 2021 at Apple’s ‘Spring loaded event’, meaning the product is coming up on five years old. Apple has some cool upgrades in the pipeline for the next generation model, hitting on many important issues that the initial model had:
A newer Ultra Wideband chip for better connectivity
Much longer range with Precision Finding, thanks to that new chip
Key privacy upgrades to address stalking concerns
With the new Ultra Wideband chip, AirTag 2 will support triple the range with precision finding. Currently, the feature works 10-30 meters away. It could work from 30-90 meters away with the next model, allowing you to find exactly where your AirTag is from an even greater distance.
In the past, people have also modified current AirTags to disable the speaker, allowing the AirTag to easily be used for stalking without being able to alert the victim with a noise. Apple has since made software enhancements so users can get notified, but speaker removal still creates a concern. AirTag 2 should address that.
It also shouldn’t be changing in design, so existing AirTag accessories should still work even if you decide to buy an AirTag 2.
