In Brief
Tesla is recalling more than 10,000 Powerwall 2 home batteries sold in the U.S. after nearly two dozen confirmed incidents of the units overheating, emitting smoke, or catching fire.
The U.S. recall comes just months after Tesla recalled Powerwall 2 batteries in Australia following reports of fires.
In the Australian recall, the battery cells inside the Powerwalls were manufactured by an unnamed third-party supplier. Tesla did not immediately reply to a question about which company manufactured the cells covered by the U.S. recall.
Altogether, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) said five Powerwalls have caught fire, resulting in minor property damage, and another six started smoking. The remaining 11 overheated. Electrek first reported the news.
The CSPC posted the recall notice on its website today. The affected Powerwalls were sold between November 2020 and December 2022. The agency is urging people to verify that their batteries are online and then check the Tesla app for whether the unit is included in the recall.
Tesla will discharge affected units that are online, and the company will provide replacements.
