Last October, Threads rolled out over 100 communities, which built on the fact that users were referring to in-app groups as “Books Threads,” “NBA Threads,” and so on. Today, Meta is expanding the communities feature to more than 200 interests, and adding a couple of beta features. Here’s what’s new.
New features set to promote more in-community engagement
When Meta introduced communities, it combined two features: topic tags, and custom feeds. As a result, users could find communities via the Search tool, or across their timeline, marked by blue topic tags.
The initial set of communities included AI Threads, F1 Threads, Kpop Threads, Design Threads, and TV Threads. Now, Meta is expanding the official communities list to over 200 groups, with even greater granularity.
For instance, now NBA fans can join team-specific communities, such as Lakers Threads, Knicks Threads, or Spurs Threads.
In addition to that, Threads is now testing two community-focused features, which are initially available to a small set of users: community champion badges, which highlight highly-followed users who help keep conversations active in the groups they participate in, and community flair, which lets users display their interests within a given group.
For instance, users in the “Book Threads” community might want to add which genre they like, so other users can see what they’re into at a glance. Meta says that community champions can define flair options, and members can choose one to appear as a tag on all of their posts within that community.
